Good Practice Studio: Maximising the learning from good practice

Identifying good practice is relatively straight-forward. Replicating it, disseminating it effectively, and widening its impact is much more difficult. This workshop will look at the LSDA NI Impact Evaluation model and will then showcase good practice from learning and skills providers across Northern Ireland and Scotland including information on the impact of Health Promoting College.

  • Morning session: the focus will be on FE colleges with inputs from Steve Taylor, Director of Quality and HR and Sarah Rennie, Student Representative on the Board of Governors, Angus College. Marie Thompson, Assistant Director, LSDA NI will focus on the LSDA NI Impact Evaluation Model. Noirin McCourt, Health Promotion Co-ordinator and Janet Little, HR Manager, Southern Regional College will provide an input on Health Promoting College.
  • Afternoon session: Caroline Groom, Business Improvement Director, JHP Group, will focus on work-based learning.

Teaching and Learning Zone: Is teaching and learning at the centre of your improvement agenda?

The imperative of this workshop is that teaching and learning should be at the centre of the Improvement Agenda.

  • Morning session: presentations from institutions in England that have gained top grades in inspections or have some innovative approaches in their T&L strategies. Featuring Sir Bill Moorcroft, Principal/Chief Executive, Trafford College and Mr Geoff Hall, Principal/Chief Executive, New College Nottingham.
  • Afternoon session: Frank Coffield will be exploring some of the themes from his recent publication ‘All you ever wanted to know about learning and teaching but were too cool to ask’.

Leadership and Management Arena: Managing Improvement: A Strategic Approach

There are a number of strategic initiatives relating to leadership and management.  These workshops will focus on some of them to help stimulate discussion relating to Organisational Improvement.

  • Morning session: featuring Bryn Davies, Principal, Ystrad Mynach College and Michael Gould, DEL.
  • Afternoon session: David Collins, CEO, LSIS will be joined by Mark Batho, CEO, Scottish Funding Council and Trevor Neilands, Principal & CEO, Northern Regional College.

14-19 Curriculum Corner: A curriculum for learning and skills improvement

Devising and providing a curriculum to meet the skills needs for today, tomorrow and beyond is central to the business of any learning and skills organisation. 

  • Morning session: inputs from Dave Rowley, Education Programme Director, Bloodhound SSC and Richard Hanna, Director of Education Strategy, CCEA.
  • Afternoon session: focus on partnerships between the schools and FE sectors in Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.  Inputs from Martin McGuire, Cumbernauld College, Phillip Jefferies, LSN, Alan Logan, Boys Model and Joseph McLarnon, Belfast Metropolitan College.

Industry workshops which will show the benefits of technology in teaching and learning and how it has a positive impact on the student experience and their achievement.

  • Morning session: Mark Stimpfig, Managing Director, ConnectED, will demonstrate the most compelling advances in mobile learning.  In addition, Mark Fitzsimons and Stephanie Conville, Microsoft will provide an overview of cloud computing.
  • Afternoon session: Larry Tobin, Calyx will provide a focus on building relationships with the student body via Microsoft Dynamics CRM while Geoff Foot and Lilian Soon, Molenet, will demonstrate how handheld devices and the web can change the way we engage with learners.  This session will aim to stimulate ideas for new models of teaching and learning.

European Quarter

It is all too easy to get immersed in your job in the learning and skills sector and not to set some time aside for reflection. Improving your practice and performance by learning from others can be a very powerful learning opportunity. Study visits to countries across Europe can help shape our thinking.

  • Morning Session: In this workshop, Audrey McKeown, a EU Lifelong Learning Programme Consultant, will provide advice and guidance on how to apply for funding for Study Visits and other related activity while John Noble, DEL, will give a Department perspective on the value of engagement with programmes like Leonardo, Grundtvig and Transversal.
  • Afternoon Session: This workshop will allow delegates to learn from the experiences of senior FE College staff and LSDA NI staff who have been involved in recent visits to Poland, Portugal and Germany.
