Economic development policy
The NI Assembly was last week appraised of the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s (DETI’s) future plans.
This followed on from an independent review commissioned way back in December 2008 and its report of September 2009. Perhaps the most startling – though not unexpected – recommendation is to merge the existing departments of DETI and DEL into one ‘department of the economy’. Another recommendation is set to implement here the North Carolina model of skills training and support for business and industry, a model that has long been admired not only in Northern Ireland but elsewhere in the UK.
